Five minutes with... Marc Intervera

Marc is Jurlique's Horticulture Specialist, our 'Biodynamic Dynamo'. He has a Bachelor of Science degree and specialist qualifications in Postharvest & Production Horticulture. Marc's two greatest loves – nature and science – led him to Jurlique where today he devotes his time and energy researching and developing innovative practises in the fields of irrigation and biodynamic farming…

Back in the late 80s, after I finished high school, I took off into the bush and travelled Australia. I ended up working at an irrigated tomato farm on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert and fell in love with irrigated water culture. I've always enjoyed nature and being outdoors. For me it’s always stemmed from a respect for sustainability and being involved in organic and biodynamic water systems.

At Jurlique the soil is the basis of where we start all our production, so it starts even before the seed; it starts with looking after the earth. On the farm, we grow in an organic and biodynamic way which means that we don't use any chemicals, pesticides or herbicides that aren't from nature or created naturally. It all starts with the soil; so we encourage the microbes and the worms, and we increase organic matter, tending to the soil every day so that it grows us good, healthy plants.

My top eco tip is to try companion planting, a process we use here at Jurlique and which anyone can try who has a garden. Companion planting has to do with increasing the biodiversity in your garden. The idea is to encourage lots of insects, birds, bees into your garden as a natural way to protect your plants. Companion plants like basil, peppermint and lavender are great for helping to protect your garden from insects.

My favourite Jurlique product is... Rose Shower Gel. I find it so good to shower with, I even wash my hair and shave with it!
